Preventing Falls
Show Transcript
Let’s walk through a few simple habits that make moving around your home feel steadier and safer. Nothing complicated — just small choices that work for anyone, in any home.
But first, if you’ve had a fall or a close call this past year — even one you brushed off — it’s worth mentioning to your doctor or nurse. Not as a crisis, just as information. It helps them help you stay safe on your feet.
You’ll find a few minutes of reorganizing in the kitchen or bathroom pays off every single day.
For instance, try to keep the things you reach for most right where your hands naturally go — shoulder height, maybe a bit lower.
Reaching too high or too far forward can throw off anyone’s balance.
And when you need support, reach for something solid — a countertop, a
sturdy rail, a wall.
Skip anything that can scoot, roll, or wobble under your hand. Chairs, walkers, even a door handle… they all move when you don’t want them to.
Handrails on stairs are your best friend. If you can, make the rail a different color from the wall. It’ll be easier to see. The same goes for the front edge of each step — a bit of contrasting tape or paint helps you focus on where to place your feet.
And those loose area rugs? They are tripping hazards. Bare floors are safer floors.
Grab bars in the bathroom — one by the toilet, one in the shower or tub — give you something dependable to hold.
And if you share your home with a furry friend, a bright collar or a little bell helps you know exactly where they are. No surprises underfoot.
These small choices add up to more confidence with every step.
You deserve to feel steady in your own home — and you can.
