Lighting Tips

Most of us find that we need a lot more light as the years go by—five times more isn’t unusual. The good news is that once you start shaping the light to the job you’re doing, all sorts of tasks suddenly feel easier. So here’s a simple way to make light work for you, not against you.
Let’s start with a simple principle: shine the light on the task, not in your eyes.
That one tip will help you more than anything else.
In the kitchen, for example, under-cabinet lighting does a much better job than a single bright overhead. It brings the light right onto the counter where you’re chopping, measuring, or reading a recipe, without creating glare off the walls and cabinets.
When you’re reading, aim for a lamp that shines from just behind your shoulder so the page is lit evenly. A good lamp shade helps, too—opaque, not sheer, and sitting below eye level so your page is well-lit without light shining in your eyes.
Outdoors, a few solar lights along a path or near the entryway can make those darker areas far more predictable. And stairways—inside or outside— deserve special attention. A well-lit stairway doesn’t just help you see the steps; it also makes their depth and shape clearer, which makes the whole staircase feel more steady.
Around the house, it can help to keep a small flashlight nearby—one in the kitchen for stove dials, or one by your medications. A quick beam of direct light can give you just the boost you need.
None of this is about adding brightness everywhere. It’s about aiming the light so it supports whatever you’re trying to do. Once the light is working in the right direction, everything from reading mail to cooking dinner becomes more comfortable and more dependable.
And that’s the whole goal—simple adjustments that help you move through your day with a little more ease and a lot more confidence.
