Clarity with Contrast

Learn the basic principles of contrast and how contrast can help you see better at home.

One of the simplest ways to make life a little easier is by playing with contrast — light against dark, dark against light. A small change in color can make a big difference in what stands out and what blends in.

Try painting door frames or doorknobs in a color that pops against the door. That bit of contrast makes them easier to find — no searching, no guessing.

A little contrasting tape around switches, outlets, or keyholes works wonders too. It helps your eyes land right where they need to.

On steps, mark the front edge of the first and last tread with bright paint or tape — it gives your depth perception a boost and helps you step in the right place.

And if you can, paint handrails in a color that stands out from the wall. They’ll be easier to locate.

Here’s another favorite — when you’re cooking, use a cutting board that contrasts with your food.
